Clinical Application of Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump

Contraindications
The IABP is contraindicated in patients with:
* Severe aortic stenosis * Aortic dissection with impending rupture * Active bleeding * Uncontrolled hypertension * Severe peripheral vascular disease
Complications
The IABP can be associated with a number of complications, including:
* Bleeding * Infection * Limb ischemia * Renal failure * Stroke * Death
Nursing Care Considerations
Nurses play a vital role in the care of patients with IABPs. They should be familiar with the indications, contraindications, and complications of IABP therapy. They should also be able to provide skilled nursing care to patients with IABPs, including:
