The Basics of Pitch
The Deck and the Cards
Pitch is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. The cards are ranked from A (high) to 2 (low),and the suits are ranked from spades (high) to clubs (low).
The Players and Teams
Pitch is played by two teams of two players each. The players on each team sit opposite each other.
The Deal
The dealer shuffles the deck and deals 6 cards to each player. The remaining 8 cards are placed face down in the center of the table to form the "kitty".
The Bidding
The bidding begins with the player to the left of the dealer. Each player in turn bids on how many tricks their team will take. The minimum bid is 6 tricks, and the maximum bid is 12 tricks.
The Trump Suit
After the bidding is complete, the player who bid the highest number of tricks chooses the trump suit. The trump suit is the suit that will rank higher than all other suits during the game.
The Gameplay
The player to the left of the dealer leads with any card. The other players must then follow suit if they can. If a player cannot follow suit, they may play any card, including a trump card.
The highest card of the suit led wins the trick. If a trump card is played, it wins the trick regardless of its rank.
The team that wins the trick leads the next card.
The Scoring
The team that takes the number of tricks they bid earns 10 points for each trick. If they take more tricks than they bid, they earn an additional 10 points for each extra trick. If they take fewer tricks than they bid, they lose 10 points for each trick they missed.
The first team to reach a score of 100 or more points wins the game.
