Katherine of Aragon was the first wife of King Henry VIII and the mother of Queen Mary I of England. She was a devout Catholic and a strong advocate for the rights of women. She is considered one of the most important figures in English history.

Early Life

Katherine was born in Spain on December 16, 1485. She was the daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. She was educated at the Spanish court and was considered one of the most beautiful and accomplished women in Europe.

Marriage to King Henry VIII

In 1501, Katherine married Prince Arthur, the eldest son of King Henry VII of England. Arthur died in 1502, and Katherine was married to his younger brother, Henry VIII, in 1509. The marriage was a political alliance between England and Spain, and it was hoped that it would produce a male heir to the English throne.

Queen of England

Katherine was crowned Queen of England in 1509. She was a popular queen and was known for her piety and her charity work. She founded several hospitals and schools, and she was a patron of the arts.

The Divorce

In 1527, Henry VIII began to seek a divorce from Katherine. He was infatuated with Anne Boleyn, one of Katherine's ladies-in-waiting, and he wanted to marry her. Henry claimed that his marriage to Katherine was invalid because she had previously been married to his brother Arthur. However, the Pope refused to grant Henry a divorce, and Katherine remained Henry's queen.

The Break with Rome

In 1533, Henry broke with the Roman Catholic Church and established the Church of England. He then divorced Katherine and married Anne Boleyn. Katherine was banished from court and lived in seclusion for the rest of her life.

Death

Katherine of Aragon died on January 7, 1533. She was buried in Peterborough Cathedral. Her daughter, Mary, became Queen of England in 1553 and reigned for five years.

Legacy

Katherine of Aragon was a devout Catholic and a strong advocate for the rights of women. She is considered one of the most important figures in English history. Her marriage to Henry VIII and the subsequent divorce led to the break with Rome and the establishment of the Church of England.
