After graduating from high school, Kelda attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned a degree in aeronautical engineering in 1960. She was the first woman to earn an undergraduate degree in aeronautical engineering from the university.

Aviation Career

After graduating from college, Kelda began her aviation career at Northrop Corporation in Hawthorne, California. She worked as an aircraft designer on the F-5 Freedom Fighter and F-86 Sabre jet fighters. In 1962, she became the first woman to be a flight test engineer for a major aircraft manufacturer.

In 1964, Kelda joined the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP),a volunteer organization that flew non-combat missions during World War II. She flew over 50 different types of aircraft during her time with WASP.

After leaving WASP, Kelda worked as a test pilot for Piper Aircraft Corporation. She was responsible for testing the company's new aircraft designs and providing feedback to engineers. She also flew airshows and performed aerobatic maneuvers.

In 1972, Kelda became the first woman to serve as an aircraft production manager at a major aircraft manufacturer when she was appointed to that position at Grumman Aerospace Corporation.

Post-Aviation Career

After leaving Grumman, Kelda continued to work in the aviation industry. She served as a consultant to various government agencies and aerospace companies. She also taught aviation courses at the University of Southern California.

In addition to her aviation career, Kelda was also an active advocate for STEM education and outreach. She founded the Kelda Donald McGuire Aerospace Foundation in 1990 to promote STEM education for girls and underrepresented minorities. The foundation provides scholarships, mentorships, and grants to students pursuing STEM careers.

Legacy
