The Howe brothers, Richard and William, were two of the most important British generals in the American Revolution. They played a major role in the early years of the war, leading the British army to victories at Bunker Hill and New York. However, their fortunes changed after the Battle of Saratoga, and they were both eventually recalled to England.

Richard Howe

Richard Howe was born in London in 1726. He entered the British army at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks. By the time the American Revolution broke out, he was a major general. Howe was a skilled military commander and a gifted diplomat. He was also a close friend of George III, the British king.

Howe was appointed commander-in-chief of the British forces in North America in 1775. He arrived in Boston in May of that year and immediately began planning an attack on the city. On June 17, 1775, Howe's troops landed at Bunker Hill, just north of Boston. The Americans were waiting for them, and a fierce battle ensued. The British eventually won the battle, but they suffered heavy losses. Howe's victory at Bunker Hill gave him a foothold in Massachusetts, but it also showed him that the Americans were not to be underestimated.

In the summer of 1776, Howe captured New York City. This was a major victory for the British, and it seemed to put them on the verge of winning the war. However, Howe's hopes were dashed at the Battle of Saratoga in October 1777. The Americans, led by General Horatio Gates, defeated the British army and forced Howe to retreat. This was a turning point in the war, and it led to Howe's recall to England.

William Howe

William Howe was born in London in 1729. He also entered the British army at a young age and served with distinction in the Seven Years' War. By the time the American Revolution broke out, he was a lieutenant general.

William Howe served under his brother, Richard, in North America. He commanded the British troops at the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Battle of New York. He also led the British army to victory at the Battle of Brandywine in 1777. However, Howe's fortunes changed after the Battle of Saratoga. He was recalled to England along with his brother.

Aftermath

The Howe brothers played a significant role in the early years of the American Revolution. They won important victories for the British, but they were also responsible for some of the war's most costly defeats. Their recall to England marked a turning point in the war, and it helped to pave the way for American independence.

They were both eventually recalled to England, and the British army in North America was placed under new leadership.
