The United States Constitution is the supreme law of the land. It was written in 1787 and has been amended 27 times since then. The Constitution establishes the framework for the federal government and protects the rights of citizens. However, the Constitution is not a perfect document. There are a number of common sense reforms that could be made to the Constitution to preserve our union and ensure that it remains a beacon of hope and freedom for future generations.

1. Abolish the Electoral College

The Electoral College is an outdated system that gives too much power to small states. It is also undemocratic, as it is possible for a candidate to win the popular vote but lose the Electoral College vote. This has happened five times in the past, most recently in 2016. Abolishing the Electoral College would ensure that every vote counts equally and that the president is elected by the majority of voters.

2. Overturn Citizens United

The Citizens United decision by the Supreme Court has allowed corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money on political campaigns. This has given corporations an outsized influence over our elections and has made it difficult for candidates to run for office who do not have the support of big money interests. Overturning Citizens United would level the playing field and give all candidates a fair chance at winning elections.

3. Enact campaign finance reform

In addition to overturning Citizens United, Congress should pass comprehensive campaign finance reform legislation. This legislation should limit the amount of money that individuals and corporations can donate to candidates and should also provide public financing for elections. This would help to reduce the influence of money in politics and would make it more difficult for wealthy special interests to buy elections.

4. Restore the Voting Rights Act

The Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965 to protect the voting rights of African Americans. However, the Supreme Court has gutted the Voting Rights Act in recent years, making it easier for states to pass laws that discriminate against voters of color. Congress should restore the Voting Rights Act to its full strength to ensure that all Americans have the right to vote.

5. Pass a constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights

The Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade has put abortion rights in jeopardy. Congress should pass a constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights and ensure that women have the right to make decisions about their own bodies.

6. Pass a constitutional amendment to protect LGBTQ rights

LGBTQ people face discrimination in many areas of life, including employment, housing, and healthcare. Congress should pass a constitutional amendment to protect LGBTQ rights and ensure that all Americans are treated equally under the law.

7. Pass a constitutional amendment to establish term limits for members of Congress

Members of Congress have become too entrenched in their positions. They are often more concerned with protecting their own interests than with representing the interests of their constituents. Congress should pass a constitutional amendment to establish term limits for members of Congress and to ensure that new voices are heard in government.

8. Pass a constitutional amendment to balance the budget

The federal government is running up massive amounts of debt. This debt is a burden on future generations and it is making it difficult for the government to provide essential services. Congress should pass a constitutional amendment to balance the budget and to ensure that the government lives within its means.

9. Pass a constitutional amendment to abolish the death penalty

The death penalty is a cruel and unusual punishment that has no place in a civilized society. It is also ineffective as a deterrent to crime. Congress should pass a constitutional amendment to abolish the death penalty and to end the use of capital punishment in the United States.

10. Pass a constitutional amendment to create a national healthcare system

The United States is the only developed country in the world that does not have a national healthcare system. This is a disgrace. Every American deserves access to quality, affordable healthcare. Congress should pass a constitutional amendment to create a national healthcare system and to ensure that all Americans have the healthcare they need.

These are just a few of the common sense reforms that could be made to the Constitution to preserve our union and ensure that it remains a beacon of hope and freedom for future generations. It is time for Congress to take action and to make these much-needed reforms a reality.
