On February 1, 1937, four African American teenagers walked into a Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, and sat down at the counter. They were refused service because of their race. The teenagers, Ezell Blair Jr., David Richmond, Franklin McCain, and Joseph McNeil, refused to leave and instead staged a sit-down strike. The sit-down strike lasted for six months and was a major turning point in the American labor movement and the Civil Rights Movement.

The Woolworth Sit-Down was inspired by a similar protest that had taken place in St. Louis, Missouri, a few weeks earlier. In St. Louis, a group of African American students had staged a sit-down strike at a Walgreens lunch counter. The sit-down strike in Greensboro was more successful, however, and it sparked a wave of similar protests across the country. Within a few months, sit-down strikes were taking place in cities such as Atlanta, Nashville, and Baltimore.
