Early Life and Career
Julius Caesar was born in Rome in 100 BC to a wealthy patrician family. He was a brilliant student and a gifted orator. Caesar began his political career at a young age, serving as a military tribune in Asia Minor and later as quaestor in Spain.
In 60 BC, Caesar formed a political alliance with Pompey the Great and Crassus, known as the First Triumvirate. This alliance helped Caesar to secure the consulship in 59 BC. As consul, Caesar passed a number of popular laws, including a land reform bill that benefited the poor.
The Gallic Wars
In 58 BC, Caesar was appointed governor of Gaul (modern-day France). He spent the next eight years fighting a series of campaigns against the Gallic tribes. Caesar's victories in Gaul greatly increased his popularity and wealth.
Caesar's account of his campaigns in Gaul, known as The Gallic Wars, is one of the most important historical documents from the ancient world. It provides a detailed description of the geography, people, and customs of Gaul.
The Civil War
In 49 BC, Caesar crossed the Rubicon River, an act that marked the beginning of the Roman Civil War. Caesar's forces defeated Pompey's army at the Battle of Pharsalus in 48 BC. Pompey fled to Egypt, where he was assassinated.
Caesar was now the undisputed master of Rome. He was appointed dictator for life in 45 BC. As dictator, Caesar implemented a number of reforms, including a new calendar (the Julian calendar) and a system of public assistance for the poor.
The Assassination
On March 15, 44 BC, Caesar was assassinated by a group of senators led by Brutus and Cassius. Caesar's death shocked the Roman world and led to a new round of civil war.
